Smoke Alarms
"In the event of a fire, properly installed and maintained smoke alarms will provide an
early warning alarm to your household. This alarm could save your own life and those
of your loved ones by providing the chance to escape."

** The national Firewise Communities program is a multi-agency effort designed to reach beyond the fire service by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, and others in the effort to protect people, property, and natural resources from the risk of wildland fire - before a fire starts.
The national Firewise Communities program is intended to serve as a resource for agencies, tribes, organizations, fire departments, and communities across the U.S. who are working toward a common goal: reduce loss of lives, property, and resources to wildland fire by building and maintaining communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings.
Firewise Communities/USA is a unique opportunity available to America's fire-prone communities. Its goal is to encourage and acknowledge action that minimizes home loss to wildfire. It teaches you to prepare for a fire before it occurs. The program adapts especially well to small communities, developments and residential associations of all types. Firewise Communities/USA is a simple, three-legged template that is easily adapted to different locales.
** Especially for the youngsters: Smokey Bear "Only you can prevent wildifires." A number of online interactive games, information, etc., geared towards the younger generation to teach them about fire safety.
** Property owners safety tips:
- Make sure your address is visible from the street. If you have a gate, be sure it's unlocked and open in anticipation of the
entrance of emergency equipment and vehicles.
- Keep bushes, trees, grass and weeds cut or trimmed to avoid the chance of brush fires, especially close to your dwelling and other structures.
- Important! If you have security bars on your windows, make sure they are fitted with inside quick releases. Also, make sure you check these often to
ensure they're operational in the event you need to use them as an emergency exit!

Seat Belt Use, "Click it or ticket"
Despite a decade of gains in daytime seat belt use, NHTSA data shows that nighttime belt use continues to be
much lower, particularly among young drivers. New data released today shows 4,842 teen passenger
vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes during 2006.
* At night, 68 percent of those killed weren't wearing their seat belts.
* During the day, 57 percent of those killed weren't wearing their seat belts.
This year's nationwide enforcement effort is supported by a $7.5 million national advertising
campaign focused on increasing nighttime seat belt use, primarily among teens.
